The Planning & Zoning Commission on Tuesday night unanimously approved a special permit application that Silver Hill Hospital filed more than two years ago in order to use a home at 225 Valley Road as a residential medical treatment facility. The approval follows months of discussion between the psychiatric hospital and neighbors, as well as a legal dispute with the town, and comes with a set of five conditions agreed upon by Silver Hill and a neighborhood group, and seven additional conditions between the institution and one contiguous neighbor. ***

An out-of-state property preservation and maintenance company appears to have winterized the long-vacant, antique home at 4 Main St. Historic District officials have expressed concern that the 1870-built Greek Revival-style house on God’s Acre could be a case of “demolition by neglect” and invoked the prospect of a blight citation there. In July, a civil court issued a judgment of foreclosure by sale on the property, according to records on file with the Connecticut Judicial Branch.

Police Chief: Risks and Consequences of Underage Substance Use

As parents, we worry constantly about our children’s safety, especially when they grow old enough to be influenced by friends, the media, the Internet and other adults. The State of Connecticut’s Coalition to Stop Underage Drinking estimates that high-school student drinkers consume 35 percent of all wine coolers and 1.1 billion cans of beer annually. Subsequent risks and effects of underage drinking include an increase in injuries and fatalities, sexual offenses and youthful involvement with illegal drugs. The New Canaan Perspective

The media and some adults (including parents) regard drinking (and recently the use of marijuana) as an essential element of socializing. Additionally, some underage drinkers obtain alcohol from their parents, from their own homes or from other adults who legitimize alcohol consumption as a rite of passage for minors.

Underage Party with Booze on West Road Broken Up by Cops

A 1:01 a.m. Saturday call to police ended an underage-drinking party on West Road near Dans Highway, New Canaan police said. Police gave this account (with accusations not proven in court) of the incident:

When police arrived, they saw groups of youths trying to flee the property, although the heavily wooded area around the house prevented many of them from getting far. Approaching the house, police found numerous empty and full beer cans. Nobody they found at the scene was 21 years old or older. Officers found the host, a 19-year-old resident of the home, and charged her with permitting minors to illegally possess liquor and procuring liquor for minors.

Chichester Road Siblings, 16, Cited for Possession of Alcohol at Underage Drinking Party

Police cited two 16-year-old Chichester Road siblings on Saturday night after breaking up an underage drinking party at their house. At about 8:31 p.m. on Saturday, after receiving information that alcohol had been dropped off at the residence, police were dispatched to the area and, arriving, saw youths scatter, according to a police report. Police discovered that no parents were home and didn’t know about the party, and found beer cans and marijuana and smoking paraphernalia on tables inside, the report said. The youths each were cited for possession of alcohol by a minor, police said. The case was referred to the Juvenile Matters Division of state Superior Court in Stamford.

Police Cite New Norwalk Road Girl, 16, for Underage Drinking Party

Police on Thursday night cited a 16-year-old New Canaan girl after breaking up an underage drinking party at her New Norwalk Road home. At about 9:31 p.m. that night, the first day of April break, police responded to an anonymous tip about the party. Arriving there, officers found eight kids—16- and 17-year-olds—playing Beer Pong and drinking beer, according to a police report. The teen who lived there told police that her parent were out for the night and unaware of the party, the report said. Police saw several plastic cups scattered around the room and 16 unopened beers, the report said.
