A large-breed Japanese dog stopped traffic last Wednesday afternoon on Carter Street after getting off his property and making his way to East School. It happened around midday on Jan. 4, when the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department was called to Little Brook Road on a report of a roaming brown dog. The Akita made his way up Clapboard Ridge Road toward Carter, and was spotted trotting down the middle of the street, police said. He wanted nothing to do with an Animal Control officer wielding a snare, so he trotted happily back to his home.

One of New Canaan’s most prominent, historic and beloved homes has hit the market. The 1897-built Colonial at 299 South Ave.—a favorite home of many New Canaanites who walk and drive along the main corridor into town—is being advertised by Christine Saxe, sales vice president at William Raveis Real Estate in New Canaan (see photos above). A lovingly restored and preserved three-story home, it originally was a tuberculosis hospital established by Dr. Myron Brooks (known as ‘Brooks Sanatorium’), who gave his name to a side street alongside it. ***

Members of a Town Council subcommittee said Tuesday that they’re hearing the new cell tower erected on Silver Hill Hospital property is not, at this point, improving service for residents of eastern New Canaan in any measurable way. ***

Brother kittens, likely abandoned, were found under a bush on Millport Avenue on Monday, according to Officer Allyson Halm of the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section.

2016 Cyclocross National Champion David Thompson Junior Men 9-10

Congratulations to New Canaan’s David Thompson, who last weekend earned the title 2016 Cyclocross National Champion in the Junior Men 9-10 division (see video above). We hear that David is a 9-year-old who attends the fourth grade at West School, and local cycling guru Lou Kozar of New Canaan Bicycles informs us (dryly) that David’s accomplishment is “kind of a big deal.”

After impounding and multiple roaming dogs that all had invisible fence collars on them, New Canaan Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm is urging residents to double-check the batteries on those devices as well as their systems at home. A golden retriever on Skyview Lane, Labradoodle on Jelliff Mill Road and a pair of dogs on Oenoke Lane—a German shepherd and pit bull—all were collected by the New Canaan Police Department Animal Control section in recent days. ***

4th Man Out – TRAILER (Green band)

4TH MAN OUT is coming out on February 5, in theaters and VOD. Evan Todd (“Switched at Birth”) stars as Adam, a small-town, blue-collar mechanic who likes beer and hockey but surprises his buddies when he tells them he’s gay.

Some very exciting news to share here: 1998 New Canaan High School graduate Jed Mellick is producer of a highly acclaimed new feature film, “Fourth Man Out,” which is set for a Feb. 5 release in 11 cities including New York City. The movie (check out the trailer above), reviewed here by Variety, has earned accolades from critics and at film festivals over the past several months. We hear from Jed that for anyone who cannot make it to a theater, Feb. 5 will mark a release date on VOD and other platforms, and there’s a pre-order link on this web page with the trailer.

The New Canaan Preservation Alliance on Sunday afternoon presented awards to two individuals and five properties in its eighth annual Awards Ceremony, sponsored by Halstead Property. Speakers included Rose Scott Long, the outgoing president, state Sen. Toni Boucher, NCPA Founder and past President Mimi Findlay and Rachel Carley, an historic consultant hired by the Alliance to continue the inventory of New Canaan’s historic houses.
