Two Restaurants To Be Re-Inspected by Town Health Officials

Two restaurants in New Canaan will undergo a re-inspection by town officials after failing public health inspections, records show.

The New Canaan Health Department following an unannounced Sept. 10 inspection cited Le Pain Quotidien for having food items in a reach-in refrigerator at a prohibitively high 50 degrees Fahrenheit, according to a copy of the sanitarian’s report. 

Inspectors use a state Department of Public Health standard, citing food service establishments for violations that range in seriousness and carry a corresponding weight from one to four points. A “failed” inspection is triggered either by one or more four-point or “risk factor” violations—as in this case—or a total score of less than 80 points.

LPQ scored a total of 93 points, but failed to meet a standard in the risk factor “food protection” category.

Other minor items cited at LPQ include “hand washing sink caulking is unclean [and in] disrepair” and “Interior of the ice machine is unclean,” according to the report.

In a Sept. 11 letter to LPQ, New Canaan Director of Health Jennifer Eielson notified the restaurant that it had been cited for “several violations” of the Public Health Code. The violations are to be corrected by Sept. 24, the letter said. 

“If, upon re-inspection, your rating score is below 80, or if there are any 4 demerit point items in violation, we shall take immediate steps to suspend your permit to operate a food establishment, as per … the Public Health Code of the State of Connecticut,” it said.

A sanitarian during a Sept. 12 inspection at Locali on Forest Street found some foods at a prohibitively high temperature, according to the inspection report (chicken sausage, pork sausage, mozzarella and garlic butter). The restaurant earned a total score of 88. It is to be re-inspected by Sept. 26. 

Officials from the restaurants could not immediately be reached for comment.
