Zumbach’s closed for the day on Sunday following what the popular coffee shop’s owner called a “small operational fire issue” with a roaster.
The shop at the corner of Pine and Grove Streets was “never in danger,” according to owner Doug Zumbach, and will reopen at 7 a.m. Monday.
Firefighters responded to Zumbach’s at 77 Pine St. just after 11 a.m., according to a dispatch notice.
The issue with the roaster was “fairly common in the industry,” Zumbach said when asked about the issue. A roaster got too hot and residual beans caught fire, officials said.
Coffee roasters are in fact “built to withstand” it and there was mostly smoke in the commercial space, Zumbach said.
A cleaning crew was on site on Sunday afternoon, readying the store for the week.
A New Canaan resident, Zumbach is the founder and organizer of the well-attended “Caffeine & Carburetors” car shows. There are two events planned for 2024, according to the C&C website, on June 16 downtown and Oct. 20 in Waveny.
