As Mother Nature adorns us with beautiful Fall colors, we say goodbye to the 227 hanging baskets that have made our eyes sparkle, our mouths turn up, and our spirits soar throughout the past several months.

Most of us know they are there, but few understand who toiled to create and maintain them. The 33 traffic triangles will lose color, and the greens encompassing them will become more important. Wreaths will be hung shortly after Thanksgiving in our public spaces, and adorable gnomes will pop up in various places.

I must admit that although I moved to this town almost three years ago, until recently, I didn’t know how this beauty came about. Full disclosure: I joined the organization the day I got the answer. Ten thousand annual volunteer hours is what it takes to make all of this happen, and the unsung heroes of the New Canaan Beautification League, celebrating its 85th year, are an amazing group of people who literally get their hands dirty every day.

Thank you, NCBL, for all you do, all the best,

Geri Rhoades
