76-Year-Old Man Charged After Shoplifting Downtown

Police on Wednesday afternoon arrested a 76-year-old Bronx, N.Y. man after he tried to steal eyeglasses from an optical shop downtown.

At about 2:59 p.m. on Jan. 27, officers were dispatched to 146 Elm St. on a report of an attempted larceny, according to a police report.

Responding units identified the suspect near Elm and Main Streets based on a description of him and from surveillance video and still images captured by the shop’s security system, the report said.

Following an investigation, police determined that the man tried to take two pairs of eyeglasses from the store, Eyes on Elm, the report said. Employees there confronted him about the theft and he returned them before leaving, it said.

In speaking to the man, police determined that he had on his possession two blouses from J. Crew worth $216 and a musical spinning toy worth $36 from New Canaan Toy Store, the report said. The man admitted that he’d stolen the items, it said.

Police issued a summons on scene the misdemeanor sixth-degree larceny, or shoplifting. 

He was released after promising to appear Feb. 24 in state Superior Court.
