‘May Love Be the Last Word’: New Canaan Gathers for 9/11 Ceremony

Rick Rescorla is probably not a household name in New Canaan.
As Police Chief John DiFederico noted on Friday morning, Rescorla had no direct ties to the town.
Yet his story of “unmatched valor” on Sept. 11, 2001 reflects the same “extraordinary courage” demonstrated by “ordinary men and women” on a day that saw 2,977 innocent lives lost—among them “343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and dozens of medical personnel who ran directly towards danger so that others may live,” DiFederico told more than 200 people gathered on the front lawn of Town Hall for the community’s annual 9/11 memorial service.
