Police Investigations: Vandalism and Fraud

A 66-year old man told police last week that a rock came through the screen and shade of his Summer Street home and damaged the wall. The vandalism was reported at 3:20 pm on Friday, June 26, two days after the incident. It is not clear if the rock was thrown intentionally or accidentally, possibly during lawn-mowing, according to a police report. The approximate value of the damages is $75 dollars, the report said. ***

Police are investigating a reported fraud from a tag sale on Oenoke Lane last Friday afternoon, involving a fake $100 bill.

New Canaan Playhouse Committee Established to Identify Funding, Uses

What’s the best way to operate the town-owned New Canaan Playhouse? That’s the heart of the question that the New Canaan Playhouse Committee is charged with addressing, members the Board of Selectmen said Tuesday as they formally appointed a panel of locals from the Town Council, selectmen and Board of Finance to make recommendations concerning future of the Elm Street fixture. While officials have said New Canaan is not in danger of losing the building, the committee will consider funding mechanisms to raise the estimated $3 to $4 million to bring the 1923-built structure up to code, as well as additional uses for the space. “The Playhouse Committee is tasked with the exploration of the public and private options leading to the funding of capital improvements, as noted in the 2015 budget review,” First Selectman Rob Mallozzi said during the meeting, held in the training room of the New Canaan Police Department. The committee is composed of John Engel, Steve Karl, and Joe Paladino of the Town Council, Neil Budnick of the Board of Finance and Beth Jones of the Board of Selectmen.

Campus Sexual Assault Safety Tips Highlighted at New Canaan Briefing

High school students set to leave for college in the fall on Monday received expert counsel on ways to stay safe in the face of sexual assault. At the second annual “Know Before You Go” press conference, New Canaan’s rising college freshman were advised on precautions that need to be taken as they set out on their own. Margie Hahn, a New Canaan resident and rising Junior at Villanova University, provided these important tips on what every college student should know at the briefing, held in the Training Room at the New Canaan Police Department:

Supportive friends that you feel safe approaching when you are in an uncomfortable situation. Easy access to the phone number of a school counselor, as well as your RA (Room Advisor). A safe word. Margie stated that she has a “safe word” with both her parents and her friends that acts as an “SOS” signal that she could discretely text to them if in trouble.
