To the Editor:

Hopefully many residents have had the opportunity to view the veterans banners that are on display on Elm, Main and South Streets downtown. On behalf of the New Canaan MOM’s of Military, we would like to thank the sponsors of our Veteran’s Day Banner Project.

The generosity of the New Canaan Exchange Club and New Canaan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 653 allows our veterans to be honored with personalized banners downtown with no cost to the families. The project was started in 2019 by Jack Goetz (USMA Class of 2025) as an Eagle Scout project, and the local MOM’s of Military proudly continue this wonderful tradition.

Dear Editor,
Once again I am in awe of the recent Literary Luncheon organized by the New Canaan Library which took place at the New Canaan Country Club on Friday, November 8th.  The event featured acclaimed and Pulitzer-prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri, who discussed her work, Roman Stories. Her stories transported us into the lives and landscape of Rome, exploring themes of identity and cultural displacement with her characteristic eloquence. The Luncheon provided a wonderful opportunity for our community to connect with an author of Lahiri’s caliber and gain insight into her creative process.

Dear Editor,

Since 1998, our community has been recognizing “unsung heroes” in our community – individuals who volunteer to serve our community and are rarely rewarded for their selfless efforts.  These outstanding volunteers devote their most valuable resource, time, for the benefit of the New Canaan community and deserve appreciation and recognition for their impact. The New Canaan Community Foundation is proud to lead this vital community program through the annual Volunteer Recognition Awards.

Earlier this month, the Volunteer Recognition Committee reviewed all the many nominations submitted in order to select this year’s extraordinary volunteers – including youth volunteers; adult volunteers; Board members; “hands on” volunteers, who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get to work; and volunteer groups – within our community. We are proud to announce this year’s awardees:

Hands-On Hall of Fame – Tom Davies, Lapham Community Center
Board Leadership – Mark Markiewicz, New Canaan Museum & Historical Society
Hands-On, MVP Award – Linda Wolfgruber, New Canaan Mounted Troop
Hands-On, MVP Award – Jim Fox, Future Five
Hands-On, MVP Award – Ty Tan, New Canaan Beautification League
Hands-On, Rookie of the Year Award – Silvana Cardona, New Canaan Fire Company No.

Coffee’s on for Thursday

Join fellow residents and NewCanaanite.com editor Michael Dinan for the monthly Community Coffee, to be held 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 in the Jim & Dede Bartlett Auditorium at New Canaan Library. The Coffee is presented in partnership with the library, and the brew is supplied by Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee (thank you, Doug). The free, public coffee is a group conversation about what’s happening around town, moderated by Dinan. Topics come from attendees and we spend no more than 10 minutes per subject.
