New Canaan Basketball Topples Ridgefield 64-59

Two days, two wins over previously-undefeated teams. It’s been quite a week so far for the New Canaan Rams boys basketball team. Twenty-four hours after handing Staples its first loss of the year, the Rams took down Ridgefield 64-59 in a tense, exciting game in double-overtime Wednesday night at New Canaan High School. “Both teams threw punches and both teams answered punches,” New Canaan head coach Danny Melzer said. “It was fun to be a part of and obviously more fun being on the winning end. It was a well-played game and I’m proud of everything we did tonight to earn the victory.”

As they have been all season the Rams were gritty, patient and resilient, never panicking nor letting the game get too far out of reach.

New Canaan Boys Basketball Knocks Off Staples 59-50

Denis Mulcahy wasn’t a name most FCIAC coaches were familiar with coming into 2021. The New Canaan senior didn’t log too many minutes last season and has mainly been content this year to be a role player – setting bone crushing screens, dominating the glass at both ends of the court, taking charges and diving for loose balls. 

After Tuesday night’s performance against Staples, Mulcahy’s anonymity will be a thing of the past. 

The 6’5” forward was left open for most of the first half and he made the Wreckers pay, scoring 10 of his team-high 18 points on the night and leading New Canaan to a 59-50 road win. “Denis played with such confidence,” New Canaan head coach Danny Melzer said. “He didn’t hesitate and believed in himself. He works so hard on his shot.

Magnus Scores 27, Leads New Canaan Basketball Over Darien 55-51

Nearly two weeks had passed since Leo Magnus last played in a New Canaan basketball game. By the end of Saturday’s contest against Darien, it seemed as though the senior co-captain had never left. 

The Colorado College-bound senior returned after missing two games due to Covid protocol and poured in a career-high 27 points to lead the Rams over the Blue Wave 55-51 in a nail-biter at New Canaan High School. 

“It felt amazing to be back out there,” Magnus told NewCanaanite.com. “Every day I was dying to come back to practice. I love my teammates and missed it so much and when I came back to practice yesterday it just felt so good to be back with my guys. Everyone is happy for each other’s success and that just leads to great wins like this.”

“Leo played like an All-FCIAC player tonight,” New Canaan head coach Danny Melzer said.

New Canaan Basketball Tops Hatters 56-34

After losing three starters to Covid-19 protocol and subsequently losing a 48-40 tilt Monday night against McMahon, New Canaan basketball head coach Danny Melzer was looking for a quick response from his team Thursday afternoon at Danbury High School. Melzer received all of that and more. The Rams came out of the gates strong and never looked back, scoring the first 15 points of the contest in a 56-34 win over the Hatters. 

“We got off to a great start and we never let up,” Melzer told NewCanaanite.com. “I love the little things we did. Making shots is awesome but that comes and goes.

Bounceback: New Canaan Girls Basketball Tops Wilton 57-23

Four days ago the New Canaan High School girls basketball team struggled offensively, scoring 24 points in a loss to Trumbull. 

Saturday afternoon against Wilton the Rams almost matched that total in the first quarter alone en route to a 57-23 blowout win over the Warriors. “The girls showed up to play today,” New Canaan head coach Kim Palmer said. “Everybody had an impact and it’s great to see that, when you can get a real true team win. We shot well and one of the things I’m most proud of is that we took care of the ball. Turnovers have been our Achilles Heel this year and today we were able to control the ball and make smart decisions.”

A dozen New Canaan players landed in the scoring column, led by Junior Meghan Driscoll who had 12 points, all on three-pointers.
