Anthony Sillo, 87

Anthony Sillo, a seventy-year resident of New Canaan, Connecticut passed away at home after a long, wonderful, full life on November 13, 2025 at the age of 87. Anthony was born in the province of Frosinone, Italy in the town of Settefrati, just 20 miles north of Montecassino, on January 8, 1938 to Michele Sillo, a stone mason and Maria Donata Sillo (nee Volante).  At the age of 17, he accompanied his father to New Canaan, Connecticut in 1955 and were joined by his mother and brothers a few years later. On April 4, 1959,  Anthony married his childhood sweetheart, Alessandra (Sandy) Massarella.  Anthony continued to work alongside his father, and then as a landscaper, fine-tuning his knowledge of sitework and building. In the 1960s, Anthony attended night school in New Canaan to study English and obtain a better understanding of American society and culture.  

Anthony and Sandy went on to raise their family of four children in New Canaan while building their business.  In 1972, he formed a residential home building company, Anthony Sillo Incorporated, which was well known for old world craftsmanship and consistently demonstrated a strong dedication to hard work and quality construction. Over many years his three sons worked for him and learned the business and gained valuable experience.  They all subsequently went on to form their own building businesses carrying on the important values, traditions and ideals.  Anthony Sillo built over 80 homes for New Canaan families during his career.  He showed tremendous pride in “his houses” and remained great friends with his customers for years to come.

James L. Lisher

March 17, 1938 – November 12, 2025

James L. Lisher (“Jim”) passed away on November 12, 2025 at the age of 87. He lived a long and vibrant life and was an active and engaged leader in the New Canaan community for over 40 years. Born in Topeka, Kansas on March 17, 1938 to Claude and Eula Lisher, he was raised in Kansas with his brother Ray. He graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS before serving in the Army as a Second Lieutenant in the signal corps in Fort Monmouth, NJ. After his Army service, Jim went on to pursue a career in brand management and marketing, starting his career at Proctor & Gamble (“P&G”) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Arthur Ben Guerrero, 69

Arthur Ben Guerrero, 69, of Stamford, Conn., died from complications of cancer on Oct. 25, 2025. 

Known as Ben, Benny, or Arthur, he was a son of the late Barbara Haley Smith and Pedro E. Guerrero. He grew up in a family shaped by creativity and imagination, and lived for many years in New Canaan. Ben had a huge heart and many talents. His children say he was born with a superpower: the ability to make anything.

Chandler “Leigh” Shapleigh Richardson, 62

Chandler “Leigh” Shapleigh Richardson, beloved father, friend, colleague, and local musician, died at his home in Punta Gorda, Florida at the age of 62 after battling cancer. Leigh was born at Norwalk Hospital on February 21, 1963 to the late Chandler S. and Jacqueline Richardson. He is survived by his sister, Aimee Harkins of New Canaan, CT and his three children; Chelsea Richardson of Lincoln, Nebraska, Megan Richardson of Monroe, Connecticut, and Michael Richardson of Manchester, Connecticut. As a young man growing up in New Canaan, Connecticut, Leigh taught himself how to play guitar. He became a music staple at local bars and restaurants in the Fairfield county area.

Rita Szanto Englund

Rita Szanto Englund passed away at peace in hospice on November 5, 2025. Rita was born on the banks of the Danube River in Budapest, Hungary on July 30,1952 the only child of Ivan Z. and Marianne B. Szanto. After the Russian invasion of Hungary in 1956 the family escaped at night through the barbed wire and guarded border into Austria. Deemed political refugees, the U.S. government flew the family to Camp Kilmer, N.J. where speaking no English they began to build their American Dream in New York City. Ivan worked as executive at various import-export companies and Mimi at I.M. Pei.
