Carlson Proposes Paid Parking on Elm Street

New Canaan’s highest elected official last week said the town should pursue a change in parking on Elm Street whereby spaces there are paid instead of free. First Selectman Dionna Carlson told members of the Parking Commission at their regular meeting that, at the same time, the town would “switch with Park Street to free parking,” an apparent reference to the paid Park Street Lot. “Most people understand that we have sort of a backwards system: Our most valuable parking is free and our least valuable is paid,” she said at the meeting, held at Town Hall and via videoconference. “And we’re seeing lots of people circling on Elm Street, creating more congestion, so it just doesn’t make sense.”

Town officials have looked at the prospect of switching Elm Street to paid and making the spaces at lots further from the very heart of downtown New Canaan free. In examining the idea 10 years ago, parking officials framed their reasons for the change in terms of downtown workers taking up the free spaces all day.

New Construction Coming to Ponus Ridge

The New Canaan Building Department on April 19 approved a permit to construct a new 6,150-square-foot home on a vacant lot on Ponus Ridge. The six-bedroom house at 1041 Ponus Ridge will include seven bathrooms, two half-baths, a finished 1,900-square-foot basement and three-bay garage, according to the permit. It will cost about $1,850,000 to build, the permit said. The contractor on the job is New Canaan-based 5K Development LLC, the architect Michael Smith Architects of Norwalk. The vacant 2.3-acre lot was purchased in February 2023 for $1.2 million, tax records show.

Injured Goose Found Shot with Arrow; Police Euthanize Bird

Authorities say they were forced to euthanize a Canada goose on Tuesday after the bird had been shot by an arrow. The injured goose was spotted in the morning by a Green Meadow Lane homeowner who contacted police, according to New Canaan Police Department Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn. “The goose was struck in the rear tail feather area,” he told NewCanaanite.com. “The goose seemed to have discomfort and issues walking.”

Police are investigating. The penalty for shooting a goose with an arrow is a charge of animal cruelty, Godejohn said.
