A Labradoodle is serving a two-week quarantine at its Orchard Drive home after biting a serviceman on the left leg on March 2. The Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department found out about the bite from Norwalk Hospital, where the victim had gone for treatment. The injury amounted to a small laceration and was not serious, according to Animal Control. No tickets were issued.

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Dinner & Social—to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 12 at St. Aloysius School downtown (see details here)—is to be held in honor of a beloved local woman. MaryAnn Walsh for 30 years worked as the receptionist at South Avenue law firm Hawthorne, Ackerly & Dorrance. She passed away last year following a recurrence of the cancer she had in her 20’s. Walsh volunteered for many years at the Kiwanis Club of New Canaan‘s St. Patrick’s Day events. Jerry Miller, an attorney at the firm, is a longtime member of Kiwanis, and until recently, so was all-around good guy and attorney David Hoyle, a fan of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.”

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday appointed New Canaan’s Christopher Hering to the Parking Commission for a term to expire Dec. 1, 2019 (succeeding the inimitable “Mayor of Elm Street” Rick Franco in the seat). First Selectman Rob Mallozzi said at the meeting that Hering “is extremely interested in getting involved in town in this capacity” and that he has “a lot of good ideas.”

A Darien dog appears to have been reunited rather miraculously with its owner. The Dalmatian mix left its Prospect Avenue, Darien home on Feb. 27 and was gone for an entire day, until it was spotted at 7:42 a.m. on Feb. 28 near Lakeview Cemetery, about five miles away. When found, the dog had no use of one of its back legs, according to Animal Control.

Here's a work from NCHS student artist Olivia Germann. It will be on display as the New Canaan Public School district celebrates the skills, creativity, and personal voice of its New Canaan High School art students with Through Our Eyes V, an all media exhibition on view from Friday, March 10, 2017, through Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan. Through Our Eyes V features works by more than 150 works of art by 130 NCHS art students, grades 9-12, enrolled in several introductory, intermediate and advanced art courses. These include: Photography, Advanced Digital Media, Studio Art, AP Studio Art, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Jewelry and Filmmaking. NCHS’s visual arts faculty and the show’s curators are Kimanne Core, Jeanne McDonagh and Jennifer Sinski. Through Our Eyes V includes several winning entries by NCHS students who have won awards at such prestigious organizations, exhibitions and competitions as The National & Connecticut Scholastic Art Awards, Teen Visions Best in Show Awards from Sacred Heart University, and the Carriage Barn’s Annual Photo Competition. Through Our Eyes V is presented by the New Canaan Society for the Arts and sponsored by Bankwell, New Canaan Alarm, HTG Investment Advisors, Santella Electric, William Raveis Real Estate, and The Fritz Eager Foundation for Art Education. An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m. The opening reception is free and open to the public. The United Methodist Church of New Canaan (UMC) celebrated its commitment to Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County (HHCFC) with a weeklong celebration. On Saturday, February 25, long time UMC members, George and Carol Bauer were honored at the Habitat Gala with the Second Mile Award. This is an award given annually to individuals who have consistently supported and volunteered at Habitat. Mr. and Mrs. Bauer have also been involved with Habitat for Humanity International and have joined Jimmy Carter for programs. They can often be seen volunteering at Habitat houses being built in Bridgeport. Pastor Eric Fjeldal of the UMC has previously been honored. Many church members attended the gala to celebrate this honor with the Bauers. On Sunday, March 5, at the regular church service, time was devoted to spreading the word about Habitat for Humanity. Richard Townsend, a member of the church and co-leader of the church’s efforts with Habitat, gave a presentation about HFCAC and UMC’s involvement with it. The New Canaan church is part of a Methodist coalition of seven churches that have 24 work days a year at Habitat houses, mainly in Bridgeport. The New Canaan church alone has sponsored 5 houses, providing 12 workdays per year. They have contributed over 4,500 man hours building these homes. Workdays are scheduled for the second Saturday of each month. In addition to comments by Stewart Adelberg, CEO of HHCFC, the congregation was treated to remarks from 2 Habitat for Humanity homeowners, whose houses were built with help from the UMC. Ray and Aida Robles have lived in their house for several years and spoke of what a difference this house has made in their lives and those of their children, who are now Honor Roll students. Tony and Kathleen Rosa and their children will be moving into their home later this fall. It is also being built by the UMC. Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County requires each family to provide 500 hours of “sweat equity” as well as financial counseling and education. HHCFC provides a mortgage at 0% interest. Over 500 applicants apply each year to become a Habitat homeowner, with only 20 per year being accepted. HHCFC aims to build 15 new houses and rehab 5 homes in 2017 in Bridgeport. It is truly a hand-up, not a hand-out. The organization, a New Canaan-based non-profit run by substance abuse prevention expert, Joyce Sixsmith, is 100 members strong and consists of local high schoolers who’ve committed to substance free living. Their “First Annual Gala: Dance Party” will take place at the Country Club of New Canaan on Saturday, March 25 from 6:30 - 10:30 pm. and will honor New Canaan First Selectman, Rob Mallozzi, for his continued support. The Ram Council members, their parents, professionals in the field and beyond are invited to attend. The Ram Council’s mission is to raise awareness about substance abuse and to prevent it among youth.
