The Board of Selectmen on Monday appointed Paul Payne as new full-time fire marshal in New Canaan, succeeding Fred Baker in the position. Payne is a qualified building inspector who has worked here for years as deputy building official.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, or CIAC, said in a Tweet on Thursday that the start of the winter season for high school sports is postponed. The organization is waiting for guidance from Department of Public Health officials and will take up the matter Nov. 17.

Kim Herr has been hired as manager of operations for Staying Put in New Canaan, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help older adults live independently and safely in the community. Executive Director Barb Achenbaum said in a press release, “Herr will offer a valuable new perspective to Staying Put as we find new ways of serving our seniors in this time of pandemic.” Herr moved to New Canaan in August with her husband, Scott, who is the new senior pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan.

The selectmen on Monday also appointed Chris LeBris as a regular member of the Board of Finance. He had been an alternate. The Board’s vice chair, Democrat Bob Spangler, has stepped down. It was unclear from the selectmen meeting whether the Democratic Town Committee had submitted a name to fill the alternate slot.
