New Canaan Library on Aug. 20 filed an application with the town to construct a new 33,798-square-foot building with 45 rooms. On Aug. 31, the town filed on behalf of Turner Construction Co. for a temporary office trailer “within the staging area for the construction of the New Canaan Library Project on the property across Maple St.”

A diamond ring was found in front of J. Crew on Elm Street around 8:13 p.m. on Aug. 26, police say. The owner could not be located and the ring was placed into property management at the New Canaan Police Department.

First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan will hold its Rally Day at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12. After the service, there will be games and treats on the front lawn and a visit from the Old Faithful Fire engine.

The owner of a Seminary Street home on Aug. 12 filed eviction papers in state Superior Court, saying a tenant who signed a one-year lease ($4,000 per month) last July hasn’t moved out though the lease has expired. The case has been stayed until Sept. 25, court records show.

The Chabad New Canaan Jewish Center will hold outdoor Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services under a large tent at the New Canaan YMCA. The services are open and free, with no membership required. This year, Rosh Hashanah will take place Sept. 6 to 8, Yom Kippur on Sept. 15 and 16. A full schedule of the High Holiday Services can be found here.

Police at about 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 25 received a report of packages stolen at an apartment complex on Millport Avenue. It’s under investigation.

Express Metro-North Railroad service on the New Canaan branch to Grand Central Terminal was restored this week, officials say.

United Methodist Church of New Canaan is holding Sunday services at 10 a.m.

The town on Monday issued an after-the-fact permit for about $225,000 worth of work done by Keith J. Manca Building Company at 141 Briscoe Road. The interior work involved removing finishes and replacing tile in five bathrooms and two half-baths, painting the house and replacing decorative hardware. “Kindly note that all the above work was done without obtaining the necessary permits,” the permit said. “This means that all required inspections during construction were not performed.”

The New Canaan Building Department on Tuesday received an application to demolish the home at 129 Parade Hill Road.

The Congregational Church of New Canaan is welcoming all neighbors to join them as they gather for worship and programming this fall. All the youth activities are back: Church School, Youth Groups, and Choirs along with Adult Formation classes and Small Groups. More info here.

The town on Aug. 18 received an application to renovate the interior of the planned new Dunkin Donuts on Elm Street. The work on 1,760 square feet of space will involve walls, equipment and cabinets, and updating an existing bathroom. It will cost about $175,000 in all. The Planning & Zoning Commission in June approved the coffee shop’s plans to move into the commercial space just up from The Playhouse.

Finally, Encore Club of New Canaan, a women’s social group founded in 1985, has announced a 2021 fall calendar of events that includes a Welcome Back Tailgate and a Welcome Back Luncheon, both in October. More info here.
