As of Thursday afternoon, more than $78,000 had been raised through an active online fundraising campaign for a New Canaan woman and East School kindergarten teacher who is battling cancer. Claudia Monaco “is the kind of person who goes above and beyond for everyone who is lucky enough to be a part of her life,” according to a GoFundMe campaign that went live Nov. 23. The mother of three received a diagnosis this spring of Thymic Carcinoma, the post said, and she “began the fight of her life.” Throughout the procedures, chemotherapy, and the constant waiting game she has had to play as she awaited test results, she has faced each step and each phase of her treatment with great strength. Even during some of her toughest days, she has remained upbeat for herself and those closest to her because of her incredible depth of character and religious faith.” Donations are going toward Monaco’s medical and other expenses, the campaign said. A New Canaan man began undergoing a rabies vaccination series after a stray cat bit him in the ankle on Nov. 17, officials sad. He approached the friendly-looking, collarless, tiger black-and-gray cat on Douglas Road and the animal bit him, breaking his skin, according to Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm. The cat hasn’t been seen since, she said.

The Board of Education during an organizational meeting Nov. 22 voted unanimously for Katrina Parkhill to serve as chair, Brendan Hayes as vice chair and Dan Bennett as secretary.

A company called “The Harvard Five Group LLC” purchased the 1957-built, single-story home at 478 Oenoke Ridge for $4.8 million, according to a property transfer recorded Nov. 22 in the Town Clerk’s office.

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 to approve the hiring of Corey Gilchrist as a part-time fire safety inspector. According to his resume, Gilchrist has worked or volunteered with fire departments in Mansfield, New Canaan, Westport and Norwalk. He graduated in 1994 from Brien McMahon High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in public safety administration in 2019 from Charter Oak State College.

The owner of a multi-family house at 95 Richmond Hill Road on Monday moved to evict tenants Karen Babrowicz and Jack McEnany from one of the units there after they failed to pay $2,600 in rent for the month of October under a one-month lease, according to a complaint filed in state Superior Court. They’d been notified to move out by Nov. 22 and still have not, the complaint said.

Waveny LifeCare Network is collaborating with an existing state-accredited Certified Nurse Assistant and Home Health Aide program to open a Certified Nurse Assistant training school on its Farm Road campus.

New Canaan won the annual “Most Generous Town” fundraising competition between The Community Fund of Darien and the New Canaan Community Foundation. Combined, the two nonprofit organizations raised nearly $500,000 in just one week, according to a NCCF press release.

The town on Nov. 22 filed a building permit application for a 60-by-120-foot ice rink at Waveny, as well as two tents and a unit heater in a bathroom. Last month, an advisory group—the town’s Parks & Recreation Commissionvoted in favor of allowing the private group behind the planned rink to have paid commercial advertisements on its wall panels. It’s unclear whether the town will approve the advertisements, which have been disallowed in Waveny in the past.

Members of Planet New Canaan have been dropping off New Canaanites’ disused pumpkins collected at the New Canaan Nature Center last Saturday at farms in the region. A U-Haul cargo van, pickup truck and Ford Expedition filled with pumpkins already have delivered the pumpkins, and the organization still has more to bring up.

Police on Thursday morning arrested a 42-year-old Canoe Hill Road man and charged him with failure to respond to an infraction. He’d been cited in February 2020 for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana, Connecticut Judicial Branch records show.

On a cold Saturday morning last month, Cub Scout Pack 70 dug in 250 daffodils on the hillside behind the pond at the foot of the sledding hill, leading to the former cornfields area, renamed “Jeniam Meadow,” in Waveny. Pack 70 Cubmaster James Grohsgal organized the Scouts and parents worked together with Waveny Park Conservancy Board Member Chris Schipper to plant the bulbs. This is the 5th year running that Pack 70 has planted daffodils in Waveny.

Finally, the selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 to reappointment several members of the Board of Finance, including Chair Todd Lavieri, Tom Schulte, Colm Dobbyn and Bob Hammill.
