During the past year, New Canaan Bicycles—owned by Lou Kozar, whose family is close to New Canaan’s Balkind family—asked customers to donate bicycles that they were no longer using to support donations to the charity that keeps alive the vision and passions of its namesake, Teddy Balkind. Teddy died Jan. 2, 2022 at age 16. During this calendar year, due to what Kozar calls “the generosity of all of the folks that donated bikes for the charity,” New Canaan Bicycles raised $4,250 for the Teddy Balkind Charitable Foundation. “I am hopeful that with further perseverance and promotion we can greatly increase the donations of bikes and build upon our initial success,” he said. [Store hours at New Canaan Bicycles is 10 to 5, Monday through Saturday.]
