Police after midnight Sunday arrested a 24-year-old New Canaan man who crashed his car while fleeing police on Route 123.

At about 12:25 a.m. on Feb. 19, an officer clocked at 60 mph a vehicle traveling southbound on New Norwalk Road in a 45 mph zone, according to a police report.

The officer pursued the vehicle to pull it over, but the driver disobeyed the signal to stop, the report said.

Then the motorist tried to turn left onto Carter Street and crashed into a car traveling northbound on New Norwalk Road, it said.

At the crash scene, officers smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and he then failed field sobriety tests, police said. The driver, a Frogtown Road resident, refused to submit to a blood-alcohol test.

He was charged with driving under the influence, speeding and disregarding an officer’s signal.

Police released the man on $1,000 bond and scheduled him to appear March 3 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
