Yesterday afternoon [Oct. 29] my wife and I were out for a short walk down South Avenue when I tripped and fell face down on the sidewalk. Before I could even collect myself, we were surrounded by five people—three neighbors who had just stepped out of their home, and two motorists who had seen me fall and stopped to help.

One woman pulled her car into the library parking lot entrance and offered to drive me home. Another, a nurse, turned her car around to come back and check on me, concerned about the scrape on my forehead and the possibility of a concussion. Someone else gently reminded me that sneakers would be a wiser choice than loafers.

This spontaneous outpouring of kindness from complete strangers was deeply moving. In an age when we often hear about division or indifference, what happened on South Avenue is a perfect illustration of New Canaan’s community spirit—the instinctive compassion and sense of responsibility we feel for one another.

My heartfelt thanks to those who stopped. You reminded me, quite literally, how strong our community truly is.

  1. True we are good God loving people
For the forces of evil to prevail the
forces of of good must do nothing

Good will always triumph over evil

  2. Beware of the massive humps on the sidewalks on the east side of South Ave around Church Street. In fact all of the asphalt sidewalks on South have seen better days.

  3. This is an impressive story but I am not surprised. New Canaan and its people have been special for the past 50 years that we have lived here. None the less, thank you to all who responded. It could have been any of us on the ground.
I agree with Ben on the state of the sidewalks on South. They need to go t0 the top of the wish list. Maggie Pierce
