New Canaanite: Plum Plums Cheese opened on Cherry Street earlier this year, and part of the reason you chose New Canaan is because you had many customers at your original Pound Ridge, N.Y. location from this town. What’s the response been like from the New Canaan community?

Gayle Martin: It’s been amazing! Everyone is so warm and welcoming. We see a lot of our regular customers from the past 7 years being in Pound Ridge, and now we have also been introduced to a wonderful and enthusiastic new crowd. Everyone is so happy to have a cheese shop in town! We’re so comfortable in our new space, it feels like we’ve been here for years.

What are your best-sellers at Plum Plums Cheese this holiday season?

Well, nothing really surpasses our Brie a la Truffe from Paris. Except maybe the Gorgonzola Cremificato that we scoop out of the wheel. Or maybe the 4-year aged Comte. But then there’s the Applewood Smoked Kurobuta Hams that are pretty awesome too. Shall I go on?

Even since you opened here in April, New Canaan has had scores of new residents buy homes in town, many of them coming up from New York City. What would you like to tell them about Plum Plums Cheese?

See! You don’t have to live in a big city to be able to source a wonderful selection of farmstead cheeses, premium quality meats and artisanal gourmet foods!

What has been your best-selling gourmet grilled cheese?

That’s a hard call. We have our classics, like the Twice as Nice and the Caveman, but we recently introduced the Smoking Shepherd and it’s quickly becoming a fan favorite.

What else would you like to tell our readers about Plum Plums Cheese?

We love New Canaan! We’re so happy in our new home. We’ll be taking a short vacation January 1-13, and will reopen on Friday January 14 with lots more to offer, including a new schedule for Cheese Classes! Thank you so much for your support and we look forward to a fantastic 2022!
