New Canaan’s police chief has good reason for taking with good-natured humor the toilet-papering of a handful of homes in town overnight: His own house was among them, with permission granted in advance.

Chief Leon Krolikowski said his daughter made the New Canaan High School varsity field hockey team and that she’d gotten a heads-up about the planned “TP’ing.”

“It’s a rite of passage of sorts,” Krolikowski said.

It isn’t clear whether or which other varsity sports teams participated in the informal, local initiation ritual.

Asked whether he was aware of any complaints from residents that may have triggered police involvement, Krolikowski said no.
