Preview and Open House for Sculpture Trail Photo Showcase

Wednesday, October, 21, 2020 @ 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The New Canaan Land Trust and the Carriage Barn Arts Center will host an open house reception to preview the Sculpture Trail Photo Showcase on Wednesday, October 21, from 4:30 to 7 pm. The exhibition is part of the Carriage Barn’s annual “Capturing New Canaan” exhibit, which opens on October 22, 2020 and runs through November 4, 2020 at the Carriage Barn.

The Sculpture Trail Photo Showcase features 15 juried photographs selected from over 120 online entries and chosen by a dedicated exhibition committee. The competition was open to photographers of all ages and experience, and judged in two classes: adults and students. Recognized photographs will be on display and available for purchase during the “Capturing New Canaan” exhibit.

The centerpiece of the Photo Showcase is an accompanying one-woman show by the Sculpture Trail’s official photographer, Elaine Lloyd. A long-time New Canaan resident, professional photographer, and former investment banker, Lloyd has taken thousands of photographs in an array of seasons and light that capture their boundless beauty and seamless integration to their surroundings.

The photo competition inspired many participants to discover the sculptures and never-before-visited Land Trust preserves. As one photographer stated in her submission “The New Canaan Sculpture Trail was so much more than I imagined it would be. Each new destination revealed an artist’s creative vision brought to life. The marriage between each New Canaan Land Trust Preserve and its chosen sculpture really highlighted the vision that The Carriage Barn Arts Center and the New Canaan Land Trust had.”

The public is invited to the Sculpture Trail Photo Showcase open house on Wednesday, October 21, from 4:30 pm to 7 pm at the Carriage Barn. Attendees are asked to wear masks and register for their half-hour viewing time slot via this link to Sign-Up Genius. The artist Anthony Heinz May, whose sculpture Ashen is prominently placed in the courtyard, and Thomas Berntsen whose Passages is highly visible in Hannan-Eberstadt Field will be on hand to talk about their works throughout the event in the courtyard.
