New Canaan Men’s Club member Richard Sandberg, who serves as acting CEO of Resolys Bio, will describe the pharmaceutical firm’s research on developing a treatment for chronic traumatic brain injury (cTBI) in remarks at the club’s regular meeting Friday, 10 a.m. in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Chronic traumatic brain injury refers to conditions arising from concussions that do not heal. While often thought to affect primarily individuals in the military and athletics, Sandberg’s remarks will point out that about 2.8 million concussions are reported annually in the U.S and disproportionately impact those older than 65. His company’s market research estimates that more than 10 million people in the U.S. are suffering from cTBI. About 60% of the reported concussions heal within the year, but more than one million become victims of cTBI – more than all the cases of prostate, colon, lung and breast cancer combined

In his remarks, Sandberg will describe his company’s research into using low doses of a specific biologic – oxidized Streptolysin O or oSLO – to reduce the inflammation in the damaged brain to stimulate healing.

Sandberg has an extensive background in the biotech field, having served as founder, chairman, CEO and/or CFO of Dianon Systems, Lifecodes Corporation, Matritech, Oxford Immunotech and Precipio Diagnostics, among other firms in the healthcare field..

Sandberg has an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
