New Canaan Police Warn Residents of ‘Water Company’ Worker Scam

More

Police are warning residents, particularly the elderly, about a new scam where criminals posing as water company workmen enter homes and then burglarize them.

Officials in nearby towns such as Darien, Stamford and Greenwich are reporting that while the fake workers enter a home to distract a resident, others come in and commit larcenies, according to New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski.

“The scam usually involves a man is knocking on an elderly person’s door trying to get into the house to perform a ‘water test,’ ” the chief said. “While the resident is distracted, someone else will enter the home and take valuables.”

Krolikowski advised residents that real water company employees wear a uniform and have company identification, and that before allowing anyone to enter their homes—especially when no appointment has been scheduled—people should confirm their identities.

Charles V. Firlotte, Aquarion’s president and CEO, said in a prepared statement: “Aquarion Water Company employees follow strict protocols when entering customers’ homes and businesses, which include showing the customer an Aquarion photo ID.” Aquarion Customer Service can be reached at 1-800-732-9678.

New Canaan Police encouraged residents to stay better informed, connected and send anonymous tips to the department by downloading the “MYPD” application in the iPhone or Android marketplace. After downloading the application search for “New Canaan.”

New Canaan residents should immediately report suspicious persons to our Department at 203-594-3500 or call 911 if it is an emergency.
