In one of a series of community events marking October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the downtown on Thursday hosted its first-ever Pink Stroll, a collaboration of the Chamber of Commerce, local merchants and Connecticut affiliate of Susan G. Komen.

We spoke to town resident and breast cancer survivor Jacqueline Dorman about her early diagnosis through not just mammogram but also ultrasound, and her decision to participate in the inaugural Stroll.
This week also saw the Board of Education postpone its decision on setting a new rate schedule for school facilities rentals, and firefighters freed a young deer that got caught in a resident’s fence on Greenley Road.

One northern New Canaan property owner’s plan to erect a standalone barn that will double as a garage went through, and we caught up with some Saxe seventh-graders downtown on Friday who told us about their obsessions of the moment.

Town Talker
The big news this past week included the release of renderings of a proposed new Post Office on Cross Street, part of a mixed-use residential-and-commercial space.
Looking north at the eastern side of proposed new mixed-use building that could house New Canaan Post Office. Project owner is Karp Associates Inc. and architect is S/L/A/M Cooperative.
Planning officials say the Cross and Vitti Streets band are “ripe for change” and that, by bringing in some residential living (the Post Office building that’s been proposed would have three levels of residences above it) and improving the streetscape and updating the allowable uses and density of the area, New Canaan may find a more suitable use and look for the neighborhood.

New Canaan Youth
Our most-shared story of the week is a profile of a talented New Canaan High School junior who long has aspired to be a fashion designer.
Sara Brindisi not only designs her own clothes, but she also sews them together and wears them. This month, she’s taken a solid step forward in her dream of becoming a professional fashion designer by … well … doing professional work.
Her favorite clothing boutique, Caren Forbes, is selling Brindisi’s very own “circle skirt”—here’s the story.

We also spotlighted a pair of outstanding NCHS athletes for the Athletes of the Week feature: Senior co-captain Kylie Towbin broke her own school diving record, scoring a 263 against arch-rival Darien, and cross country runner Alex Ellsworth has been New Canaan’s top finisher in all but four of the Rams’ 18 dual cross country meets this season.
Government

Parks officials this week heard an initial (more details to come) proposal from the New Canaan YMCA to “bubble” the Waveny Pool next winter while the organization’s own facility undergoes an extensive renovation.
The town this week also approved funds to replace the sidewalk on Main Street between Vine Cottage and the very bottom of the hill at God’s Acre. As it is now, the sidewalk there is at grade with the street.
Green Thumbs

The venerable New Canaan Garden Club this week unveiled plans to create a wildflower meadow—similar to the one that residents enjoyed this summer past at Route 123 and Parade Hill Road—in the far corner of Irwin Park.
Town officials also reminded residents that mulch is available at the Transfer Station through Nov. 15.
Sports
While NCHS Rams Football Coach Lou Marinelli’s squad traveled to Danbury Friday night to cinch a clear 42-14 victory and move to 5-0, officials this week approved about $30,000 to make repairs to baseball and softball fields at Waveny and elsewhere.
