A New Canaan dog finished a 10-day home quarantine last weekend after attacking another canine passing by his house, records show.
Police on March 25 received a report from a local woman saying she’d been walking with her son and dog on Cedar Lane at about 6 p.m. “when a black lab ran out from behind a home and started attacking her dog,” according to an incident report obtained by NewCanaanite.com through a public records request.
The attacking dog “was dragging a retractable leash and a young boy came running after him,” the report said. The woman “asked the boy to grab the leash but he did not respond,” according to the report, filed by New Canaan Police Officer Ryan Nero. She then “tried to separate the two dogs and at some point, got bit on her right thumb,” the report said.
Eventually, a woman “arrived and regained control of the dog,” though the victim told police that “she was scared and returned home without getting the woman’s information,” according to Mero’s report. The victim then went to urgent care for treatment. There, she was advised to “file a report to make sure the dog is located and all veterinarian shots are confirmed,” the report said.
Returning to Cedar Lane, police found that a homeowner there “has a black lab named ‘Diesel’ that she shares with her sister who lives in Wilton,” the report said. The Cedar Lane dog owner “stated that her sister and 8-year-old nephew came over while she was at work to walk Diesel and that is when the incident must have occurred,”the report said.
The dog normally stays in New Canaan from Tuesday to Thursday every week, the woman said.
NCPD Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn confirmed the seven-year-old Black Labrador mixed-breed dog’s vaccinations were up-to-date with the South Wilton Veterinarian Group and ordered a home quarantine through April 5.
As someone who takes care of dogs for a living—retractable leashes should be for dogs less than 15 pounds only. A regular leash plus a harness gives more control for medium to extra large dogs.
