The New Canaan Library has always been a force for good. Its 143-year compact with the town centers on its role as a place where the community intersects around learning, literacy and the celebration of ideas.

Generations of talented librarians have helped New Canaan children learn to read, students to prepare, and adults to satisfy their curiosity and learn new skills. From the beginning New Canaan Library has been well supported by the families of New Canaan. The virtuous cycle of mutual support is an affirmation of the central role the library plays in our community.

Amid the hardship and uncertainty created by this coronavirus, we salute the spirit of service and care evident in every layer of our community and town government. New Canaan Library is proud to play its part.

The library team is doing exceptional work, continuing to provide service by shifting their already excellent programming to an online delivery platform, with hundreds tuning in for virtual programs and classes, including a special technology partnership with the Chamber of Commerce to promote local businesses.

Impressively, the library staff has been reaching out to many seniors in our community each week for a personal check in—offering a sense of continuity and connection that is a lifeline and balm. We are so very proud of the staff members who organized a highly successful food drive on May 21st that yielded 4 tons of food to replenish local food banks in their hour of increasing need.

We support the town’s strong leadership and thoughtful management of our resources which we are confident will enable New Canaan to weather this storm. As a Board, we too resolve to move forward with confidence and careful planning for the library’s future.

Our new building will attract young families to New Canaan with the promise of a modern, fit-for-purpose structure that will magnify the excellent work of our world class library team. We are asked daily by excited community members about when the building will launch. It’s gratifying to hear the enthusiastic support for this visionary project that will revitalize our downtown and help reconnect our community.

With substantial private commitment to the project already made, we are steadfast in our belief that this is the project our town wants and now, more than ever, needs. Share in the excitement at www.newcanaannewlibrary.org and imagine the future at the library today.

Thank you and be safe,
