Did You Hear … ?

Board of Education Chair Katrina Parkhill said during Tuesday’s public hearing before the Board of Finance that she is “hopeful that we will achieve a start time closer to 8 a.m.” for elementary school students. A logistics consultant had been hired by the Board of Ed “to look for opportunities to save time on bus routes” under a proposed start times schedule, which would have seen East, South and West Schools start at 7:45 a.m. The school board will present a final start times schedule at a meeting on Monday, Parkhill said. ***

Sandra Dennies, former CFO for the town of New Canaan, has been hired as director of administration for the city of Stamford, according to The Advocate. She succeeds New Canaan’s Mike Handler in the position. He stepped down last week.

New Canaan Library on Rebuilding Plans: Keeping 1913 Building ‘Not Viable’

In the 15 years that successive New Canaan Library boards have studied the prospect of a rebuilt facility, conducting focus groups and hiring architects to come up with designs, it’s become clear that the best plan for the community requires demolition of what remains of the original structure there, officials said Tuesday. Though they carefully considered a renovation or incorporation of the 1913 building into a future library, “each board came to the same conclusion,” Alicia Wyckoff, a former president of the organization, told members of the Board of Finance during a budget hearing at Town Hall. “In order to get the types of spaces and functions of a modern, 21st Century library that our community is requesting—more programming spaces, meeting and study rooms, more places for the teaching and learning that is so important to our community today—we need to build a new library on a new footprint,” Wyckoff said, speaking on behalf of the library, its board and supporters. “These considerations led to the Midcentury Modern design that pays homage to an historically important architectural movement and one for which New Canaan is well known.”

She added, “Furthermore, as these plans came into focus, it became abundantly clear that it was not viable to retain the 1913 building for a multitude of reasons. First, it is not financially feasible for us.

Gofer Ice Cream On Track To Open in One Month

Gofer Ice Cream is on track to open downtown in late-March or early-April, according to the business’s owner. The final major piece of the interior renovation at 103 Main St. that’s been underway since January is a granite countertop, said franchisee Jordan Savitt, who owns the business with his wife, Dina. “I am over-the-top excited to be going to such a great town like New Canaan,” the North Stamford resident told NewCanaanite.com. “We have already had some New Canaan people coming into our Darien location, and a lot of New Canaan kids applying online, so I am very excited to open our ice cream store at a perfect time.”

Gofer has operated in the area for 17 years, and the Savitts already own and operate both Darien and Wilton locations.

Drunk Driving Charge for 38-Year-Old Man

Police last week arrested a 38-year-old Stamford man and charged him with driving under the influence.

At about 3:45 p.m. on Feb. 27, an officer on patrol stopped a vehicle traveling westbound on East Avenue with a brake light out, according to a police report. During a subsequent stop, the officer detected signs of impairment, the report said. The man was taken into custody and charged following field sobriety tests, it said. He refused to undergo a test to establish his blood-alcohol level, police said.

Police additionally cited him for a motor vehicle infraction, because the man wasn’t driving with an Ignition Interlock Device that was required as per the terms of his last drunk driving arrest.
