A new car dealership is planned for the corner of Park and Cherry Streets, a vacant structure long known to locals as the “Merrill Lynch building.”
According to a Zoning Permit application filed on behalf of property owner DP 4 Cherry Street LLC, the property at 4 Cherry St. will be converted into an “auto dealership.”
Renderings that accompany the application show a sign outside the building that says ‘Polestar.’
Polestar is a Swedish-born manufacturer of electric vehicles, according to the company’s website.
The existing building, which currently is undergoing renovation, will have four bays for vehicles inside, renderings show. Interior renovations call for a “new wetbar,” according to the plans.
It isn’t clear just when the new dealership will open or whether it will operate as a sales floor or show floor. Polestar could not immediately be reached for comment.
Thought folks might be interested in knowing that Polestar is owned by Volvo and is their electric car division.
It’s interesting that an electric only brand chooses New Canaan to showcase its vehicles. I think we just made it onto the map of progress. Polestar does have a dealership in Westport.
Just a few points of interest on Polestar. Ford purchased Volvo in 1999 and ended up selling it to “Geely” in 2010. Geely owns several car brands including Lotus. They are a massive electric car producer in China. Polestar became Volvos electric brand with them sharing development costs etc. with Geely. In early 2024 Volvo divested itself of the majority ownership of Polestar and turned it over to Geely. They still maintain a minority ownership but the parent company is now the primary owner. You might also take a look at its overall year to year stock market assessment, for more information on the brand.
That;s odd. You can’t only sell cars without service in the State of CT. Per DMV. Were is the service center? Needs to be close to the showroom. Why would you want to have service in some distant town?
This is a “display gallery”. Not a standalone dealer. They’re still going to be dependent on their Westport location. Given Polestar’s financial results, the space may be occupied by another tenant, sooner rather than later…
