Police early Wednesday arrested a 25-year-old River Street man and charged him with illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.

At about 6:24 a.m. on May 18, officers were investigating a car crash on Cherry Street near East Avenue when a pedestrian approached to advise them about a person asleep in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked nearby on Burtis Avenue, according to a police report.

Officers went there to check on the welfare of the driver, the report said. On speaking to him, police saw a K-bar knife 12 inches long on the passenger seat, the report said.

Under state statute, people cannot have “any knife the edged portion of the blade of which is four inches or more in length,” among other weapons, in a motor vehicle.

Police took the man into custody on the felony offense. They released the man on $2,000 bond and scheduled him to appear June 1 in state Superior Court.
