Police say three pistols and a shotgun were reported stolen Monday morning in an apparent smash-and-grab from a locked vehicle in a Michigan Road driveway.
Police at about 10:57 a.m. on Dec. 14 were dispatched to the Michigan Road home on a report of thefts from two vehicles parked in the driveway, according to a press release issued by Chief Leon Krolikowski.
Among the items stolen from a locked car whose passenger-side window was broken were .22, .32 and 9-millimeter caliber pistols and a 12-gauge shotgun, all locked in a gun case inside the vehicle, the press release said. A money clip, cash, fishing rods and reels and sporting equipment also were stolen. Cash was taken from the other vehicle in the driveway, which was unlocked, the press release said.
New Canaan Police now have investigated reports of 46 thefts or attempted thefts from vehicles in 2020, and 27 stolen vehicles, Krolikowski said in the press release.
“It is probable that these crimes are being committed by gang members,” he said. “Many towns in Fairfield County are experiencing similar crimes.”
He urged residents to always lock their vehicles and to never leave valuables in them.
