Police Investigate Theft, ‘Washing’ of Checks from New Canaan Mailboxes

Police are investigating the theft and alteration of checks from mailboxes in New Canaan last week.

At about 8:06 a.m. on Aug. 29, police received a report of a check stolen from a mailbox on Old Kings Highway and the amount changed from $2,825 to $10,000, according to Lt. Jason Ferraro, public information officer of the New Canaan Place Department.

A similar incident occurred at a different Old Kings Highway incident Aug. 27 , when a check was taken and “washed” with nearly $20,000 withdrawn from the account.

Both investigations are active, Ferraro said.

New Canaan Police posted on the department’s Instagram account that the best way to avoid becoming a victim is to bring outgoing mail to the Post Office.
