Police say they received reports this week of three more illegal entries of motor vehicles in New Canaan, the latest in a surge in thefts that also has seen several home burglaries.
At about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, a Beacon Hill Lane resident reported the theft of a Patagonia backpack and 13-inch MacBook Air from an unlocked vehicle in their driveway, according to a press release issued by Police Chief Leon Krolikowski.
The theft may have occurred early the prior morning, the homeowner told police.
At about 12:12 p..m. Tuesday, a Long Lots Road resident said that two unlocked vehicles parked at their house had been rummaged through, though nothing of value was taken, Krolikowski said in the press release.
So far this year, police have received reports of 42 larcenies from motor vehicles in New Canaan as well as 35 stolen cars, the chief said.
“Please remember to always lock your vehicles and take the keys with you,” Krolikowski said. “Secure valuables. Never eave valuables in your vehicle. Often, identity theft occurs when drivers’ licenses and credit cards are stolen.”
