Police arrested an 18-year-old Smith Ridge Road man before dawn on Sunday after a traffic stop in New Canaan led to possession of alcohol and other charges.
At about 1:36 a.m. on Feb. 28, an officer stopped a motor vehicle on South Avenue near Farm Road for following too closely, according to a police report.
The officer smelled alcohol on the motorist’s breath and spotted a 30-pack of Natural Light brand beer inside the vehicle, the report said.
The driver failed field sobriety tests and later refused a breath test, the report said.
He was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor on a public street, implied consent to refuse test and following too close.
Police released him on $260 bond and scheduled him to appear March 9 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
