A mixed breed dog is under quarantine this week after he bit a passerby on South Avenue who was trying to help him get back home.
At about 12:56 p.m. on Feb. 20, police received a report that the 8-year-old hound mix had left its South Avenue home after the wind blew a back door open, and was spotted by a Harrison Avenue man who noticed the animal looking bewildered and frightened, according to a report with the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section.
The man tried to coax over the dog, but it bit him in the calf, the report said.
State law requires that dogs who bite humans undergo a 2-week quarantine following the event—if it happens on the owner’s own property, then the quarantine can take place at home. Otherwise, it must happen off-site, such as at a veterinarian’s, under the law.
In this case, the animal is undergoing an off-site quarantine, which should be up on Saturday.
The animal has no history of biting and he’s new to his South Avenue home, according to Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm. The hound is up-to-date on his shots, she said.
I know the man was trying to help but the dog was afraid. Should have called Animal Control. I am sure the dog is really afraid now that he is away from his family.
Why not mention the nice person who tried to help and coax the dog back into the house. I hope he was not hurt and I am sure he is concerned about getting rabies or some other disease.
That very good man who tried to help the frightened dog is a hero. I hope he was not seriously injured. Since the dog is up to date on shots everyone involved should be fine. All animals who are afraid and/or lost will often be aggressive as self-protection even though it is completely out of character. Seems like the dog is also not accustomed yet to his new home. May everyone find a happy ending.
If it was a pitbull, he’d probably have a disposal order put out on him. Good thing it’s a hound.
