A young boy died Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle in the driveway of a New Canaan home, officials said.

New Canaan Police at about 8:42 a.m. received a 911 call regarding the incident on North Wilton Road, Lt. Jason Ferraro said in a press release.

Police, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene within a few minutes to provide care, and the gravely injured boy was transported to Norwalk Hospital’s Emergency Room, the press release said.

“Despite the valiant efforts of many first responders, and emergency room personnel, the child succumbed to grave injuries,” Ferraro said in the release.

The child was nearly two years old, he said.

“We ask that the entire New Canaan community put this child and the child’s family in their thoughts and prayers,” Ferraro said in the release. “We are all grieving as we cope with this tragic loss.”

The incident is under investigation by the New Canaan Police Accident Reconstruction team as well as members of the Wilton and Darien Police Department Accident Reconstruction teams, he said.

In response to media inquiries, Ferraro said police will not release the street address where the incident occurred in order to respect the family’s privacy. Police also will not identify the driver or say whether it was a relative of the deceased, he said.

  1. Most loving God, please cover this family with your peace and comfort. While this accident will cause them to forever mourn their precious little boy, somehow– with your constant care — they will be able to live in peace again.
Let us keep them in our daily prayers and may they feel the concern everyone holds in their hearts for each member of this loving family.

  2. To each of those caring police, fire and EMT personnel — your care for this little boy and for the family moves us deeply to remember you in our daily prayers. You are hurting for this unspeakable loss. We so appreciate your dedication and thank you for always being present in our time of need.
