Police are investigating a reported smash-and-grab in Waveny on Saturday evening.

At about 5:51 p.m. on June 10, officers were dispatched to the parking lot of the Steve Benko Pool on a report of a smashed window and items taken from a parked vehicle, according to a New Canaan Police Department press release.

An officer who had been in the park assisting New Canaan Emergency Medical Services on an unrelated call spotted a white SUV driving slowly through the lot, the press release said.

When the officer tried to get behind the vehicle to get license plate information, the driver sped up and exited onto Lapham Road, it said.

Other responding officers saw the vehicle traveling northbound on Old Stamford Road, toward downtown New Canaan, it said.

Officers saw the vehicle travel the wrong way down Elm Street to Main, then turn left on Main and right on East Avenue toward Route 123, it said.

Eyewitnesses said they saw police pursuing the white SUV at a high rate of speed on Elm Street, and that the suspect vehicle nearly struck two pedestrians.

According to the press bulletin, New Canaan Police notified both Norwalk Police and Connecticut State Police Troop G about the suspect vehicle.

“There were no injuries to pedestrians or damage to any vehicles,” the press bulletin said. “This is an ongoing investigation, no further information at this time.”
