Q&A: Carriage Barn Arts Center Plans ‘Art for Animals’ Exhibit

The Carriage Barn Arts Center this summer is planning a community-wide exhibit of artwork and poetry celebrating the bonds between people and animals. “Art for Animals,” showcasing pieces that reflect people’s love for animals, will run June 2 to 14. Those seeking to exhibit animal-themed paintings, drawings, photography, digital art, sculpture or poetry may register here, for a $20 participation fee. All funds raised through the exhibit will go toward supporting the New Canaan Police Department’s K-9 program. (Sponsors already on board include Bankwell, PRAI Beauty, Stephanie Conti Photography, WAG Magazine, Boyd Law Group and Janaco.)

The exhibit is presented in partnership with Spencer’s Run, and representatives form the dog park will join the Carriage Barn Arts Center in hosting a kickoff event in Waveny from 2 to 4 p.m. on  June 2, with an online auction for a number of animal-themed artwork, items and experiences. 

We caught up with Carriage Barn Arts Center Executive Director Hilary Wittmann to get some more information on Art for Animals.

Annual Fishing Derby Set Postponed to April 27 at Mill Pond [UPDATED]

One of New Canaan’s most unique and beloved community events is set for Saturday morning. 

Registration for the New Canaan Annual Fishing Derby will start at 8 a.m. at Mill Pond, with the derby running 8:30 to 11 a.m., organizers say. Held in memory of George Cogswell, a former New Canaan Police officer, the free Fishing Derby has been held each year—primarily at Mill Pond—since the 1980s. “It’s been going on for so many years, people just know about it and it’s something kids do with their dad,” said Jenny Esposito, president of the Kiwanis Club of New Canaan, an event sponsor. “It brings the townies together and it’s just really sweet, with the police, the firemen, the town, the Chamber.”

The pond will be stocked with 370 pounds of rainbow trout and prizes are awarded for participants 15 and younger in categories such as first boy and first girl to catch a fish, largest fish caught and smallest fish caught.

Thousands of auto enthusiasts and local residents headed to downtown New Canaan Sunday morning for the first of four Caffeine & Carburetors shows planned for 2019 (click album above for photos). Those attending the popular gathering of speciality and classic autos on Pine and Elm Streets snapped photos on a clear, warm day. “The weather first of all worked out real well—a little nervousness about that, but the automotive gods were looking out for us,” Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee owner and C&C founder Doug Zumbach, a New Canaan resident, said of the show. “The content is great—some fantastic people brought some very rare cars to the show. The New Canaan Building Department on Tuesday received an after-the-fact application from the owner of 1541 Oenoke Ridge Road who had completed an estimated $150,000 kitchen remodel without obtaining a permit. The work included installation of new cabinets, countertops and appliances, moving a sink, running a propane line and reconfiguring lighting. ***

New Canaan Police at 11:26 p.m. Monday cited a 20-year-old Norwalk man for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana after stopping him on East Avenue for driving with a defective brake light. ***

New Canaan High School graduate Curt Casali went 3-for-4 Thursday for the Cincinnati Reds in the team’s 5-0 win over Miami. In 16 at-bats this season, New Canaan’s first MLB player is hitting .375 with an OPS of .938.

Congratulations to New Canaan’s Steve Benko and Garland Allen, who are to be inducted this summer into the FCIAC Hall of Fame. The conference’s banquet is to be held June 13 at the Norwalk Inn. Many know Benko as the town’s recreation director. He is being honored for “officiating and cross country roles,” according to the FCIAC. Allen serves on New Canaan’s Youth Sports Committee and he is to be honored for “Greenwich athletics,” the conference said.
