New Canaan Farmers Market Approved for April 20 Opening

The Board of Selectmen at its most recent meeting approved use of the Lumberyard Lot downtown for the New Canaan Farmers Market for the upcoming season. The Farmers Market will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays from April 20 to Dec. 21, following a 3-0 vote by First Selectman Dionna Carlson and Selectmen Steve Karl and Amy Murphy Carroll at their Feb. 20 meeting. “The farmers and the vendors are actually anxiously getting ready to get out there and be back to the community,” Market Master Lexi Gazy of Oxford-based Gazy Brothers Farm said at the meeting, held at Town Hall and via videoconference.

New Canaan Farmers’ Market Set To Kick Off in April

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday approved use of a parking lot near the train station downtown for the New Canaan Farmers’ Market’s 2023 season. The Farmers’ Market will operate 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays from April to November in the Lumberyard Lot following the selectmen’s 3-0 vote at their regular meeting. “The farmers and vendors are excited to get back to the market and we’ll be starting in just 61 days, so it’s coming along fast,” Market Master Lexi Gazy said during the meeting, held at Town Hall and via videoconference.

Relocated two years ago from its longtime home at the Center School Lot, the Farmers’ Market had a successful season in 2022, Gazy said. “People are finding us more at the railroad station,” she said. “They’re actually hopping off the train to buy from us, so that is wonderful.”

First Selectman Kevin Moynihan and Selectmen Kathleen Corbet and Nick Williams voted 3-0 in favor of Gazy’s request to use the Lumberyard Lot.

New Canaan Farmers Market To Launch April 23 in Lumberyard Lot

The popular New Canaan Farmers Market is on track to open April 23 in the Lumberyard Lot downtown. The Board of Selectmen during its regular meeting last week approved the Farmers Market for an Earth Day celebration at launch through November. Market Master Lexi Gazy told the selectmen “the farmers are ready to come back,” and that offerings will include fresh organic produce as well as vendors offering pies, beef, pork, oysters, clams, orchids, preserves, jams, jellies, honey, raviolis and pickles. “We are looking forward to a great season,” Gazy said during the March 8 meeting, held at Town Hall and via videoconference. “The new location worked out really well for traffic and parking.

Officials Consider Relocating New Canaan Farmers Market from Center School Lot

With an eye on giving downtown New Canaan businesses a boost, town officials say they’re thinking about shifting the popular Farmers Market to a more central location. The idea of hosting the Saturday market in one of the lots behind Town Hall had come up about six years ago, but the prospect of an extensive capital project there helped put it on hold, according to First Selectman Rob Mallozzi. With that project finished and signals from some local merchants that they’re interested, Mallozzi said he’s ready to reopen the conversation. “I like the idea of having the Farmers Market in town and I agree absolutely that any foot traffic we can derive from having it a couple of blocks closer to town is a good thing,” he said. With approval from the town, the Farmers Market is slated to open Saturday, April 22 in its longtime location—the Center School parking lot off Maple Street.
