‘Apple Cart’ Owner Points To Sanitization Efforts As Tuesday Opening at Mead Park Nears

The owner-operator of a popular gourmet food provider in Mead Park said that although he always looks forward to opening for the season, he’s “very anxious” this year with the presence of COVID-19 in the community. The Apple Cart will open Tuesday at Mead Park Lodge, according to Emad Aziz. “We are hiring a person specifically to walk around all day long and clean up, sanitize tables and chairs,” Aziz told NewCanaanite.com. The Apple Cart is one of several local businesses that’s communicating with customers about on-site safety measures as New Canaan adjusts in the wake of a confirmed case of COVID-19 here. Reported Wednesday by emergency management officials, the presence of the highly contagious virus led to decisions to have New Canaan Public Schools students learn from home for two weeks, as well as the closures until further notice of New Canaan Library, Grace Farms, Lapham Community Center, New Canaan YMCA and the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society, among other organizations.

Tickets for the annual Turkey Bowl are to go on sale from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday in the auxiliary gym at New Canaan High School. They cost $10 apiece (cash) and are for New Canaan residents only, school official say. There’s a two-ticket limit and purchasers must bring photo ID. The rival football game against (ew) Darien High School is to be played at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, and no tickets will be available at the gate. NCHS recently was ranked the #2 high school in the state by niche.com, Darien #3.

Congratulations to family-owned pet supply retailer Pet Pantry Warehouse on its 75th year in business. Founded in Greenwich, Pet Pantry opened its New Canaan store on Grove Street seven years ago. In marking the milestone, the New Canaan Dog Days organizer is hosting in-store events throughout 2020—such as face painting, balloon art, ice cream socials, educational lectures, contests, portrait sessions and music—and is calling on locals to recommend nonprofit beneficiaries for its newly launched $75,000 fundraising effort. Letter: ‘Explore New Canaan’ Brings in $3,500 in Food Donations for Local Pantry

On Thursday August 22nd the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce hosted ‘Explore New Canaan’ in a bid to attract people downtown and despite some initial rain it was extremely successful, raising $3,500 worth of food donations for the local Food Pantry. 

Even Santa Claus had a hand in the helping the local food pantry as he collected over $400 in cash donations at the sidewalk sales this past July. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of Walter Stewart’s Market. Stewart’s orders and delivers items for the food pantry that they have specifically asked for. The power or partnerships at work in NC! Local, New Canaan moms Rachel Lampen and Kristen Mitrakis, who run Rock Paper Scissors Events were tasked with changing up the Taste of the Town premise, while keeping it fun with the emphasis being the local Food Pantry.

South School students underwent a safety drill Thursday afternoon, according to an email sent to parents by interim Principal John Grasso. It was “an opportunity for staff and students to practice the procedures that are in place to secure the building in the event of a safety threat to the school,” Grasso said in the email. ***

Congratulations to New Canaan’s Jack Mountford, 11, a Saxe Middle School 7th-grader who qualified this summer to play in major U.S. junior tennis tournaments, including the National Championships on both clay and hard court surfaces. In early July Mountford traveled to Orlando, Fla., for the 12 & Under National Clay Court Championships. In August, he played the National Championships on hard courts in Mobile, Ala. In both events, Mountford made it several rounds eventually running into some of the top-ranked American players.
