New Canaan Police last week ordered a Brooks Road dog under quarantine after the animal attacked and injured another canine walking near the house.

The incident unfolded shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 17, a Sunday, according to an incident report filed by NCPD Officer Robert Rizzitelli and obtained by NewCanaanite.com through a public records request.

At that time, according to the victim dog’s owner and witnesses, a Catahoula Leopard Dog left its property, entered the roadway attacked a leashed terrier mix, Rizzitelli wrote in the report. The terrier “was screaming in pain as the dog attacked” and the officer saw “blood on its fur by its neck and left front paw,” he wrote. A search of the dog found a laceration on his neck, Rizzitelli said in the report.

The attacking dog’s owners were notified and agreed to put the dog under quarantine. It was unclear from the report how the Catahoula got out and off-property, whether the terrier had to go to a veterinarian, how long the quarantine would last or whether it would be served at home or in a facility—typically in cases of dog bites, quarantines last 10 days. Police have discretion in ordering home or facility quarantines.

The attacking dog’s owners showed Rizzitelli that the animal’s rabies vaccination was up-to-date, and the animal is registered with the town, as required by law, the report said. Rizzitelli alerted New Canaan Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn to the situation, he said in the report. The victim dog lives near the attacking dog, according to the report.
