Police fined a New Canaan dog owner $75 after his Great Dane broke a leather leash and ran across the road early one morning last week and attacked a far smaller canine.
At about 6:10 a.m. on Sept. 17, the 4-year-old Great Dane attacked a Cocker Spaniel mix at Elm and Grove Streets, right in front of Karl Chevrolet, according to a police report.
The smaller dog, part of a Kimberly Place family, needed five stitches in a rear leg after the attack, according to Animal Control Officer Maryann Kleinshmitt.
The Great Dane owner was responsible for paying the vet bill, Kleinschmitt said. Though the man objected to the ticket, saying that it wasn’t his fault the dog broke free, Kleinschmitt said that dog owners are responsible for checking their own equipment.
Plus, she said, the Great Dane had attacked a smaller canine about one year ago on South Avenue, very close to the New Canaan Police Department.
