A seller of cannabidiol or ‘CBD’-based products is planning to open this summer in one of downtown New Canaan’s most visible retail spaces.

The shop, Your CBD Store New Canaan, is schedule to open July 1 at Elm Street and South Avenue, according to owner Anthony Pisano.

The store at 48 Elm St. will sell beauty creams and other skin care items, water solubles, gummies, topical creams and a pet line, Pisano said.

“We will be educating everyone that comes in the door about CBD and how beneficial it is to them and how it helps with so many different things,” Pisano said.

CBD is a chemical compound that comes from the cannabis or marijuana plant, according to the National Institutes of Health. Most recreational marijuana has very little CBD in it, according to the NIH.

Asked why he chose New Canaan for a location, Pisano said, “It all comes down to being able to help people.”

“It’s a little bit different,” he said. “A lot of people, they hear ‘CBD’ and it has a little stigma. We are looking to educate the New Canaan community on the benefits of CBD.”

A Norwalk resident, Pisano said he is very familiar with the town—he’s a member of the YMCA here and his daughter attends St. Aloysius School.

“This community here it is very close-knit, a very tight community,” he said. “Myself, my wife and my family, we really enjoy New Canaan, because you get a really nice small town community feel. and it really makes you feel good to help someone out with pain management and or whatever it is that’s bothering them, and be able to see them at softball or the Y. It gives you a sense of accomplishment, really.”

There are already Your CBD Store locations in Greenwich and Norwalk, as well as Fairfield, Pisano said, and there are more than 600 locations nationwide. The business is an “affiliate” model that’s similar to a franchise, he said.

The business already has joined the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber’s Laura Budd said the organization was “pleased the space will be taken over by a local entrepreneur.”

“While this is an extremely difficult time for retail, we know that the CBD category is hot,” Budd said. “The owners have reached out to us and we look forward to having them as members.”

Asked what the reception in New Canaan has been like, Pisano said, “Everyone has been great with us.”

“Everyone has been very positive and welcoming,” he said.
