An AT&T retail store is planned to open on Elm Street.
The telecom company’s signature blue-and-white lettering appears on an awning at 155 Elm St.
The 928-square-foot commercial space has been vacant since Gingerbitz closed last summer.
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy said, “This store will certainly benefit all the AT&T customers in town who would otherwise leave town to get to an AT&T store and then they are gone and shopping elsewhere.”
According to Karen Twomey, senior public relations manager for AT&T New England, the store will be authorized retailer Mobily’s second in Connecticut.
“It is what we call our classic store design” Twomey said in an email. “Mobily and AT&T are making sure to take care of the historic details of the building and have a unique design for AT&T inside the building. New Canaan is a vibrant energetic community with a small-town feel, and we’re thrilled to be part of that, and to provide our neighbors with the goods and services they need like tablet, phones and accessories, integrated business products and solutions, DirecTV as well as a host of entertainment options.”
The store is planned to be open by July 1, officials said.
The store will be open seven days per week, according to signage on its door.
A Verizon store is located in the same row of shops on Elm Street.
With AT&T opening, the “upper” portion of Elm Street’s bustling one-way stretch will see yet another vacant building occupied. Women’s clothing retailer Lilly Pulitzer opened across the street last week.
[Editor’s Note: We’ve added comments from AT&T.]
It is good to see the new stores opening up, but an AT&T store won’t fill the void of community building that Gingerbitz gave to New Canaan
Now, if they could only install a cell tower above their store that would improve their cell service in New Canaan. That cab be a real plus.
I welcome anyone who wants to pay the exorbitant rent in New Canaan. It’s difficult to keep mom and pop stores in town because of the high taxes, rents, insurance, FICA expenses, etc. You can only build so much community selling $7 cupcakes.
More “corporate” stores are needed to keep our shopping district full. It’s just how it needs to be.
