New Construction Planned for Woods End Road

The New Canaan Building Department has received an application for a 6,920-square-foot home on Woods End Road. The five-bedroom house at 72 Woods End Road will also include one guest bedroom five bathrooms, one half-bath and an additional bedroom and bathroom in a guest living area on the lower level, the Oct. 23 application said. It also will have a three-bay garage, it said. It will cost about $1.5 million to build, according to the application. 

The contractor is Jeff Scalise Building Contractor Inc. of Stamford, the architect Fairfield-based Marc G. Andre. 

The 2.02-acre property, located in the two-acre zone, includes a 1956-built, five-bedroom house with 5,424 square feet of living space, according to tax records.

Fitness Stations at Waveny To Be Removed Next Month, Making Way for New Equipment

The broken and outdated equipment in a fitness area located on a grassy, tree-shaded island across the Orchard Field parking lot in Waveny will be removed next month, officials say. Set for a widely anticipated replacement, the 60-by-60-foot all-abilities fitness area often draws children who mistake it for playground equipment, according to Selectman Amy Murphy Carroll. “Multiple times, men and women are trying to use it, and it’s swarmed by kids,” Murphy Carroll said during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen, held at Town Hall and via videoconference. 

She added that no one is blaming the kids for doing so. “I know the actual equipment has little signs on it, which every kid in the world would ignore,” Murphy Carroll said. “And the parents probably don’t even see it, to be fair.

Town To Purchase Additional License Plate Readers, Security Cameras for NCPD

Municipal officials this week approved a $67,500 contract to purchase five license plate readers and eight security cameras for the New Canaan Police Department, to be installed around town. The contract with Flock Group Inc. will “supplement what we currently have” at NCPD, according to Police Chief John DiFederico. “We currently have 10 cameras,” DiFederico told members of the Board of Selectmen at their regular meeting, held Tuesday at Town Hall and via videoconference. “This is to get into a contract for five more and eight video cameras. This will be in addition to the 10 we currently have with the company.”

First Selectman Dionna Carlson and Selectmen Steve Karl and Amy Murphy Carroll voted 3-0 in favor of the contract. 

The funds are coming from a state grant that the town’s grant writer, Greg Reilly, was able to secure, DiFederico said.

Grove Street Commercial Property Owner Sues Neighbor Over Re-Striping of Accessway, Parking Areas

The owners of a commercial property on Grove Street this month filed a lawsuit against a neighbor, saying the latter created significant problems when it re-striped a shared accessway and parking areas without consultation. In its Nov. 8 complaint, the plaintiff—the New Canaan Lumber Company or ‘NCLC,’ owner of 45 Grove St.—said its neighbor (15 Grove Street LLC, owner of 15 and 21 Grove St.) has “irreparably harmed” NCLC with its “self-help re-striping and resulting trespass on the accessway” that leads to the commercial properties. Businesses in the plaintiff’s building include the New Canaan Racquet Club. Businesses in the defendant’s buildings include Weed & Duryea.

New Canaan Exchange Club’s Annual Christmas Tree Sale Opens Nov. 29 [Q&A]

One of New Canaan’s most active service organizations, the Exchange Club (background here), is preparing to launch its hugely popular Annual Tree Sale at Kiwanis Park. The sale, whose proceeds go toward the club’s grant-giving program, benefitting local charities, will open Nov. 29 in the Old Norwalk Road park.
