H. Norman Ricker, 81

Our beloved husband, father, and friend passed away peacefully on July 2, 2022 after a long and difficult journey dealing with a stroke that gradually took him away from his family. H. Norman Ricker was born on March 11, 1941 in Maine. The family moved to New Canaan where Norm attended NCHS and moved on to the University of Connecticut. This is where he met his wife Janet, and soon after graduating from UConn married Janet in 1964. He returned to New Canaan to work as a math teacher at the high school and later on became the math department chair.

Gloria Ann Calise Franco, 95

Gloria Ann Calise Franco, 95, of New Canaan died peacefully surrounded by her loving family, on July 13, 2022.

She was born in New York City on November 9, 1926 to her parents Michael and Catherine Calise.  The family moved to Westport, CT where her father established The Westport Game and Poultry Farm on the Post Road.  She attended Greens Farms School and was a graduate of Staples High School, Class of 1944. Following her graduation, she attended Berkeley Secretarial School in NYC.

The game farm became what is now known as Calise’s Market.  Her father established a liquor store next to the market.  A young salesman wearing a snazzy bow tie caught Gloria’s attention when he walked into the store.  His name was Dick Franco.   A little matchmaking by Gloria’s sister Susie ensued.  On October 12, 1949, Gloria and Dick married.

They soon moved to Elm Place in New Canaan where they started their family.

Marvin, 8, The Little Bruiser

Marvin, our beloved Rottweiler mix, died June 28 at VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Norwalk, two weeks after a diagnosis of end-stage liver disease.

He was eight. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother Dexter. He was predeceased by brothers Wilbur, Russell and Louis. Born in Alabama around December 2013, he was rescued from a kill shelter there by Amber’s Angels Rescue of Goldens Bridge, N.Y. We adopted him at eight weeks. Handsome, irrepressible, curious and with little sense of personal space, Marv was a force of nature who made himself at home straightaway, dragging boots, mail and other household items into oversized dog beds.

Michael Fedele

Michael Fedele passed away suddenly from natural causes on June 27th, 2022 at his home on the Upper East Side of New York City, which he shared with his soulmate of 25 years, Douglas C. Wurth. Michael, and his younger brother Jason, were raised by their mother Dr. Maureen Thornby, in New York City, a place that shined within him through his style, curiosity, and respect for difference.  His pride in the City didn’t keep him local.  Empowered by a gift for languages and an ability to create community everywhere he went, he would reside in New Orleans, Paris, San Francisco, London, Biarritz, Miami, and New Canaan.  His wit, spark and keen ability to find the one place no one had ever heard about traveled faithfully with him; Michael was Michael wherever the vintage bags dropped. His life was graced and enriched by the birth of his daughter Ariel, who gave him much happiness through her individuality and warmth, and their many summers and holidays shared. Together with her husband Dr. Andrew Scott, Ariel gave Michael the beautiful gift of his granddaughter Annabelle.  He became a dad at a very young age and was forever grateful for the continuous support and love Ariel received from her mother, Kattai Barrow. Michael’s way of life was grounded in aesthetics – a belief in the moral obligation to celebrate, protect and create beauty and the arts in all its forms.  This was foretold early when he labored as a young school boy to study Latin and French, and later when he chose Tulane University to earn a degree in Art History.  It  showed again as a Member of the National Trust for Historic Preservations and a major supporter of PlayCo., an OBIE Award-winning international theatre production company.  And then most personally in the devotion with which he protected and magnified the magic of the New Canaan Bridge House.  Michael’s commitment to beauty was expansive in reach and empathetic in purpose.  He wanted the arts to thrive so we could be inspired, amazed, challenged and healed.
