Mary Washington Stewart Borie

1930 – 2025

Mary Washington Stewart Borie died peacefully on September 27, 2025, at Edgehill in Stamford, CT.  She was 94 years old. Born in Philadelphia, Mary attended Agnes Irwin School, Garrison Forrest, and Bennett College.  A devoted wife, dedicated mother, accomplished artist, avid traveler, and lifelong horticulturist, Mary lived a life full of curiosity, generosity, and joy. In 1951, Mary married David Boyd Borie, another Philadelphian, and together they shared more than 60 years of marriage until his passing in 2012. They began their life together in Sewickley, PA, later moved to Greenwich, CT, and also enjoyed time in New York City.  With homes in Greenwich and Nantucket, they embraced coastal living and wintered in Vero Beach, FL. Mary was a talented artist, known especially for her botanical drawings.  Having studied In London and at the New York Botanical Gardens, Mary painted a collection of botanicals that was inspired by the gardens of Mount Vernon – home of her relative George Washington.  She was also a skilled oil painter, exhibiting her work at different venues.

Thomas Gilroy, 75

It is with broken hearts that we share with you that Tom passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the age of 75 yrs old. Tom graduated from NCHS in a work study program.  His trade of study was done at Village Body Shop in New Canaan.  He continued working there for 30 years. After retirement he began his work at New Canaan Public School transportation department.  He made many connections with children and colleagues over the 21 years.   He left behind his smile and kindness to everyone he met. Tom is survived by his wife of 45 years Judy.  He is survived by his nephews, Jimi and Matt Gilroy and 3 nieces and two granddaughters, Celeste and Stephanie, and 4 great grandchildren, Sissy, Cooper, Joshua and Tierney.

Peter Rient, 87

Peter Rient, a former Watergate prosecutor, and architect of the U.S. Justice Department’s Principles of Federal Prosecution, died in Darien, Connecticut on September 2, 2025 at the age of 87. The cause of death was heart disease. Peter Frank Rient was born on March 17, 1938 in Moscow, Russia. His mother, Gertrude Rient Gangadharan, was a Czech linguist employed by the U.S. embassy there. His father, Mandakulatur Vishvanata Gangadharan, was an Indian engineer who, several months before Peter was born, was arrested for espionage by Stalin’s secret police and executed.

Jeffrey A. O’Connell “Coach”

Jeffrey A. O’Connell, fondly known to many as “Coach,” passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, at Bridgeport Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 80 years old. Born on August 17, 1945, in Stamford, Connecticut, to the late Eugene and Muriel O’Connell, Jeff was a lifelong Stamford resident whose life and career left an indelible mark on his community. The youngest of five children, Jeff was a proud member of the first graduating class of Rippowam High School in 1963. A three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, and baseball, his love of athletics shaped his early years and later guided his career in teaching and coaching.
