VFW Seeks Volunteers and Donations for Wreath-Laying at Lakeview Cemetery

Volunteers are wanted to assist VFW Post 653 in New Canaan to lay wreaths at the graves of deceased veterans at Lakeview Cemetery in order to honor and remember their service. All are welcome to participate on Saturday, December 7, in remembrance for National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day from 8am to 10am at the Lakeview Cemetery on Main Street in New Canaan. Please gather at the lower veterans section no later than 7:50 a.m. (from the Millport Avenue/Main Street entrance, over the bridge and straight forward). Refreshments will be served. The annual effort is supported financially by the Exchange Club, which provides the wreaths at cost, money raised from poppy sales over Memorial Day weekend and private donations.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,
Once again I am in awe of the recent Literary Luncheon organized by the New Canaan Library which took place at the New Canaan Country Club on Friday, November 8th.  The event featured acclaimed and Pulitzer-prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri, who discussed her work, Roman Stories. Her stories transported us into the lives and landscape of Rome, exploring themes of identity and cultural displacement with her characteristic eloquence. The Luncheon provided a wonderful opportunity for our community to connect with an author of Lahiri’s caliber and gain insight into her creative process.

15 NCHS Student-Athletes Sign Letters of Intent To Play Sports in College

Fifteen New Canaan High School seniors on Wednesday signed commitment letters to play sports in college starting next year.

NCHS Athletic Director Jay Egan said during the school’s annual ceremony for the student-athletes that the special day is a celebration for the student-athletes, parents and coaches. “A lot of commitment on the part of the athletes, a lot of hard work—same thing with the parents,” Egan said as the ceremony started in the Wagner Room at NCHS.

He added, “Just one comment on collegiate athletics: It’s a great opportunity. So today, I think what we’re celebrating is how hard you’ve worked to give yourself a great opportunity. High school athletics is a fun time in your life. You get to play with your friends, you’re in your hometown.
