Who Knew? An Hour Away, a World Apart

‘Who Knew?’ is sponsored by Walter Stewart’s Market. Use a compass, if such a thing still exists, to draw a circle with a one-hour driving radius around New Canaan. You’ll find our little town sits squarely within striking distance of wildly divergent energies. With the traffic gods on your side, you can get to a Michelin-starred tasting menu in Midtown or a clam shack up the Connecticut coast. Yankees or Mets, Giants or Jets, New Haven apizza or a Central Park cart dog—the point is, our location is a prime launchpad for discovering the best of what’s out there.

The ninth annual Addiction Awareness Vigil will take place on Wednesday, August 27th, beginning at 7:00 pm (casual music and meet-n-greet starting at 6:30), at the corner of Elm Street and South Avenue. This year’s theme, “Sharing Stories Saves Lives”, builds on the experience of the past nine years and past themes, and the event will highlight three individuals who share their recovery stories. NCPSG founder, Paul Reinhardt, says he is convinced that the Vigils over the years have saved lives, because people have heard how life can change for the better.

I would like to thank the person that found my prescription sunglasses the day after the waveny concert in the park. They were in my chair and must have fallen out onto the grass as we were packing up in the dark. Going to the Park & Rec and finding them made my day/summer and saved me $$$.

Election 2025: Letters of Endorsement

NewCanaanite.com received the following letters ahead of the Republican Caucus, to be held Tuesday. We will not receive or publish further letters before the Caucus. ***

I encourage all registered Republicans in town to attend our caucus next Tuesday evening at Saxe.  Five Republicans are running for four available slots on the ballot.  I will be voting for Arvind Bajaj, Scott Gress, Paula Levin and Penny Young.  Penny’s decades of distinguished service on the Town Council have produced a list of accomplishments, too long to list here.  Scott has been a tireless voice for the good of our community, well, for his entire life.  I don’t personally know Arvind and Paula as well as I know Penny and Scott, but in discussing their character and work in town with my friends that do, I am excited about the possibility of having them serve on Town Council. William Walbert

Former Chairman of the Town Council

To the Editor:

In every election, we’re asked to choose leaders who reflect our community’s values and who will act in its best interest. As a longtime advocate for older adults and their families, I believe it’s time we acknowledge a simple truth—our seniors deserve a stronger voice in the decisions that shape our future.

On behalf of the Fireworks Planning Committee, I would like to thank all who supported the 44th Annual New Canaan 4th of July Independence Day Fireworks Celebration at Waveny Park by purchasing an entrance pass and attending. We enjoyed spectacular weather and had a most memorable afternoon and evening with lots of family fun, great music, gourmet food and a fireworks display that was one of the best in recent memory. The residents of New Canaan are solely responsible for making this tradition possible by buying an entrance pass or making a donation.
