Election 2025: Letters of Endorsement

NewCanaanite.com will publish letters for the Republican Caucus that are received by July 18. Send letters to editor@newcanaanite.com to have them published here. ***

Next Tuesday, July 22, registered Republicans will gather at Saxe Middle School to select candidates for the November general election. While most of the town races are uncontested, the race for Town Council has five Republican candidates vying for four seats. These are important seats: town council members vote on a myriad of town issues, big and small.

On behalf of the New Canaan Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), I would like to thank the ACME Store supervisor Nancy Layman along with the rest of New Canaan Store team for their generous donation of sandwiches, cookies and water in support of the NC CERT volunteers during the Family Fourth Celebration on Friday, July 4th.
CERT has been assisting the New Canaan Police for several years with traffic and pedestrian control within Waveny Park during the July 4th Celebration. Our mission is to provide a safe and steady flow for vehicle traffic and provide safe crossings for pedestrians.
ACME’s kind donation of food and much needed water helped to sustain 26 volunteers who worked this event over 5 hours in the heat of the late afternoon and early evening on Friday, July 4th. Once again we appreciate ACME’s support of this New Canaan community event and our CERT volunteers.

Op-Ed: Budget Surplus Used to Reduce Taxes

[Todd Lavieri is chair of the New Canaan Board of Finance.]
The Town of New Canaan Board of Finance completed the budget process earlier this month for Fiscal Year 2026 that begins next week on July 1st. For Fiscal Year 2025 that ends on June 30th, we have some good news. Our budget surplus is forecasted to come in at $8.0 million –more than 50% higher than expected. The town is expected to spend approximately $800,000 less than budgeted while revenues came in $7.2 million higher. We were expecting a $4-5 million surplus when we budgeted a year ago.

Dear Editor,

On Saturday, June 14, The Glass House hosted the 2025 Summer Party—a celebration of architecture, landscape, art, preservation, and community. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and provides critical support for the care of our 49-acre historic site, as well as our educational and interpretive programs. As has been the trend on recent Saturdays, rain made an appearance. We are incredibly grateful to the hundreds of friends and guests who brought high spirits and celebrated under the tents with fantastic food and cocktails, striking art and design installations, and unforgettable music and dance.
